Franjević:
I notice you have accomplished many design activities internationally. Can you
introduce yourself to those who don’t know?
Choi:
I think the following biographic statement explains about me better:
I’m a Professor of Graphic & Package Design Department at Hanyang University, Korea, specialized in Brand Design. He is the Director of the Design Research & Education Lab (DREL), a design research lab at Hanyang University. I’ve taught in visual communication design at the University of North Texas (UNT) and California State University Fullerton (CSUF). Prior to become an educator, I worked for COY Los Angeles, a prolific graphic design firm in Los Angeles, California, USA.
I’m the design author and inventor of the Hangeul-Gak (a personal design methodology), Design
Conceptor (a personal design conceptualization methodology), and the National Street Name Plates & Building Number Plates for the National Governments of Korea. I’m a founder and chief director of the United Designs, International Biennale Design Exhibition and a Vice President of Visual Information Design Association of Korea (VIDAK) and
Korean Ensemble of Contemporary Design (KECD). I’ve been an advisor for the Korean National Government Organizations and a Juror for many national and international design competitions. My design works can be seen in DESIGN MANAGEMENT by AVA publishing, COLOR MANAGEMENT by RotoVision, GRAPHIS LOGO 4 by Graphis, THE NEW AMERICAN LOGO by Medison Square Press, BREAKING THE RULES IN GRAPHIC DESIGN by Rockport Publishing, and CYBER DESIGN published by Rockport Publishing. Communication Arts Magazine (USA), Print Magazine (USA), Graphis Logo Annual (USA), Graphis Poster Annual (USA), Hong Kong International Poster Triennial 2010 (China), Moscow International Biennale of Graphical Design Golden Bee 6 (Russia), 9th Tehran International Poster Biennial (Iran), Kyosu Graphic Design Club (Japan)
awarded him for excellence in design. The US Library of Congress has his outstanding posters as permanent collections. I had displayed my designs at national and international group exhibitions and solo exhibition and gave presentations to many national and international organizations, universities, and businesses on design education, design issues, research and branding.
As always, I try to be a good teacher by exploring and practicing designs and beyond. I want my students to know that the design is more than a life.
Franjević:
Please tell us about the United Designs?
Choi:
United Designs is for all designers who want to share and understand different cultures and to be connected with designers from around the world in friendlt manner. Designers express their creativities with his/her individual style and process, but United Designers share our own creativities without no prejudice against cultural and religious aspects. The exhibition organized in different country every 2 years to share our understanding in visual communication through exploring experimental poster designs themed ‘Environmental Awareness’ and client relations based designs. I am amazed by its growing reputation and participation, United Designers. I guess there are many designers with good heart. Thanks for my friends. I never meet most participants but we share our hearts through design works and some e-mail (Facebook is a great technology for me to connect our
participants.) Organizing an international event is difficult and so is the United Designs. Each time, we have new director and he or she will be a part of our co-directors pool after completing the exhibition.
Franjević:
You are a world traveller. And you build and create culture bridges all over the world
using the graphic design and visual communication. Did you visit also some other European
countries? What do you know about my homelands: Croatia and Principality of Liechtenstein?
Choi:
Thank you for calling me that! There are so many places I want to go and I have not visited.
I try to visit a new place once a year. Yes, I visited European countries before. I visited UK for
giving a presentation and conducting design research and educational relationship. I visited France,
Germany, Swiss, and Italy for conducting field design research. I do not know much about Croatia and
Principality of Liechtenstein but it is my future plan to visit Eastern European countries when I have
opportunities. I bet your homelands are beautiful and have wonderful culture.
Franjević:
In which directions do you want move next UD exhibition? Which country you’d love
to organize 6th United Designs exhibition and why there? Have you some fix ideas or is the
situation still open?
Choi:
I believe in faith. I already receive interests to host the next exhibition but it is too early to decide. I will decide next host for the 6th UD exhibition in year 2012. It needs about a year to organize, so a new host will be announced before September 2011.
Franjević:
On the end of this interview I thank You so much for Your time and cordially please for an end statement, something what you’d love to say the world using this possibility.
Choi:
Our world is senstive! The Natural World is fragile and the Human World must learn how to live with the Natural World. When designers want to participate the United Designs, they first understand the designer’s role in the world. We as designers create meaningful forms that communicate messages to persuade people. Therefore, designers are responsible for people’s decision making; we can make people to have wrong decisions. If they understand and practice this in their designs, they
are already a United Designer. I hope more thoughtful designers join our historical events in the future. Everyone is happy here in United Designs.
